Giant Trevally are the aggressive heavy weights of the reef. To mix it with these leviathans, cast your most robust popper around the reef fringes and prepare for an explosive strike. Quite often it all ends quickly and not in the anglers favour. However, if you’re lucky enough to turn their head, then you’re in with a back-breaking chance of landing a trophy fish. Fishing the reefs surrounding Ono and Kadavu as well as Beqa lagoon and Vatulele off Fiji’s Coral Coast are the best bets. Ono in particular is a sport fisherman’s paradise with red bass, coral trout, bluefin trevally, long nosed emperor, spanish mackeral, sailfish as well as mahi mahi, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna all found in the waters surrounding these picturesque islands.

Both blue and black marlin are sometimes found around the island of Kadavu, where big fish are often seen crashing through the bait schools congregating close to shore, or on the seamounts. Apart from the excellent marlin fishing, dogtooth tuna are another popular target, providing anglers with the chance of multiple hook-ups and spectacular action throughout the year. These cooler waters also see hordes of wahoo congregating along the reefs edge, offering yet another world class target for anglers. When it comes to wahoo, Ono and Kadavu islands serve up the biggest brutes in the South Pacific.
