New Saltiga Is On The Way!
August 23rd, 2010 | By Rowan Stanek

First introduced in 2001, the current Saltigas all have an excellent reputation amongst the sportfishing fraternity, where demanding anglers only have time for tackle that is smooth, strong and reliable. Sporting some sharp cosmetic upgrades, the new Saltiga looks to be a solid evolution of Daiwa’s flagship heavy duty saltwater spinning reels. The shape of the body and the spool remain more or less the same, while the reel sports an improved handle design. Compared to the old models, the 2010 Saltigas boast increased drag capabilities (up to 15kg on the 4500, previously 10kg) and a lighter overall weight (just 600gm for the 5000, previously 825gm). Beneath the new bling the reels include a cluster of impressive features as standard, including Real Four Technology, Hyper Digigear, Ultimate Tournament Drag, Airbail and a new Zaion Air Rotor, made from the same strong & ultra-light material introduced in the Luvias series.

Also included in the new Saltiga reels is the NASA-developed magnetic fluid technology that Daiwa are marketing as ‘Magseal’. Already seen in their 2010 model Certates, the magnetised grease forms a seal inside the body of the reel, avoiding friction and preventing any saltwater or dust intrusion, significantly improving corrosion resistance and hence the life expectancy of the reel.

The word on the web is that Aussie anglers will have to wait until the end of this year for the 4500 & 5000 models to hit our stores, with the 3500 & 4000 models expected out by February/March next year. For anglers looking to upgrade their Dogfight or Expedition, apparently the new 6500 series won’t be released until November 2011, and will be 20% more expensive than current models! Considering 6500 Saltigas are averaging around $1300.00 in the shops at the moment, you’re likely looking at over $1500.00 when the new models make their debut next year…
