NZ Kingfish Season Is Heating Up!

The Hot Bite Begins!
If patterns follow the last couple of years then this is the start of the hot bite. Last year from now until December we had some of the most memorable sessions on the water I have ever had. Without a doubt the next four months can be some of the most exciting times we have here in the Bay of Plenty.

NZ Kingfish Jigging Trips

At the moment the fish are feeding up hard on jack mackerel (yellowtail) and are nailing jigs in deeper water, mainly around the 60 to 80 metre marks. Most of the fish are in the 12kg to 20kg range but the occasional big fish has been hitting the jigs and dusting up the anglers. Water temperatures are now perfect here for the juvenile squid to start popping up on the surface, this is what we are all eagerly waiting for as when this happens things can get pretty chaotic! The fish will be driving the squid up to the surface and at this time they are suckers for jigs, and the surface fishing with stick baits and poppers really fires up. Basically they’ll hit anything that moves!

Surface fishing for Yellowtail Kingfish

Last year in late August we had without a doubt one of the best kingfish sessions I have ever witnessed; by midday we pulled the pin and left them biting and in that time we had landed well over 30 fish with the average size an astonishing 25kg! Two fish over 30kg came from the last drop, part of a thrilling triple hook up – this year that could be you! I know where the fish are hiding at the moment, so if you want to get into the action for yourself, contact Ocean Blue.

Cheers,
Mark
