Super keen Sydney angler Tony Raspudic got to experience first hand what New Cal GT fishing is all about. Tony spent 5 perfect days mainly fishing the bommies inside the lagoon around Nekweta and Ouano, located near Bourail on the remote north west coast.
The action was consistent and Tony experienced some sensational fishing, pulling GT’s up to 45kg out of the shallow lagoon (in most places no more than 2.5 meters deep). Expecting that no-one else would believe just how good the fishing at these locations really is, a lot of the action was recorded on video, which you can see below;
Truly incredible GT popping action and footage, not bad for a Sydney bream angler!
Nice one and congratulations, Tony ‘The Tonch”…

Hi
Heading over to Noumea in a couple of weeks sailing from Noumea to Isle of Pines not much of a fisherman but will be taking a couple of game rods over just wonder what type of poppers u were using and what areas.Photos were awesome looks great fishing.
Cheers Andrew
Hi Andrew,
BIG poppers are the key to raising the big fish, and you should try to make as big a splash and as much of an echo with each ‘bloop’ as possible. Game rods are less than ideal for popper fishing, I’d definately recommend taking a casting rod if you plan on doing any popping at all. You could also take a few trolling lures to use with your game rods as there are a variety of pelagic species in New Cal, and Wahoo in particular will be starting to make an appearance as the water cools down.
Alternatively, our guide provides all the gear that you could need, feel free to drop us a line if you’d like to organise a day or two out with him. Let me know if you’d like some more information on fishing the area, and I’d be happy to help you out.
Cheers,
Rowan.
Just watched that video action again and it’s so awesome! Shame then to look out my window here at Sydney’s torrential winter. Hoping for a GT reprieve soon…
